Saving Water/Saving Energy

Saving water ... and energy
When we use water saving systems we become more aware of our overall water use and make other water saving measures a way of life. It’s pretty obvious that by using recycled water we are saving the equivalent amount from being taken from our dams.

Less obvious is the amount of energy that is saved by not having to treat and/or pump this amount of water to the home.  The Catchment 720L by Perpetual Water uses considerably less energy than would be required to produce and pump the same amount of water via a large centralised water supply system. Reusing water also reduces the load on sewerage treatment plants.

There are 19 different water authorities across Australia with different charges and fee structures. Most have announced that water charges will increase significantly over the next few years.

Cooling effect of plants
Don’t give up on your garden!  In times of drought many people decide to try and reduce their lawn or garden area.  Apart from the cost of paving or decking, an increased level of paving or asphalt significantly increases the heating effect on the home.

Asphalt can easily heat to 50 degrees which reflects heat into the house.  Remember as a kid running from grass patch to grass patch in your bare feet?  A green lawn remains cool even in the hottest weather.

Trees that provide shade are another obvious source of cooling for the home.
Having a green garden, particularly with trees for shade reduce the amount of air conditioning required.

Did You Know

Water for longer but less often

Watering a level garden for longer, but less often, promotes deeper roots and hardier, healthier, drought tolerant plants.

Remember to only use a hand-held hose or watering can or install drip irrigation.

(About 12 millimetres of water an hour is enough for most sessions.)
